On the Aphrodite...
This statue is an example of a sculpture made around an ancient fragment. Only the torso goes back to the Roman age, whereas the rest dates to the XVII Century, and was thus composed by Alessandro Algardi immediately after the purchase of the torso by the Bolognini family in 1658. The head, ancient but not pertinent, shows several restorations in the face and hair, and was chosen coherently with the style of the torso and the marble quality. The statue thus replicates the semi-naked type of Aphrodite knotting her hair, probably after the same type os the statue to which the ancient torso belonged.
The restoration intervention would focus on the condition assessment of the fractures and old putty of the various integrations, checked for stability and functionality, and repaired or replaced as needed. The cleaning operations would remove the deposits of dust and grime, particularly heavy in the lower part of the statue and in the areas facing upwards. Particular care will be given to the head with the intention of securing the various ancient integrations and restoring a homogeneous aspect. |
