On the Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints...

These are the central panels of an important altarpiece painted by Giovanni di Paolo - one of the most original artists of the Italian Quattrocento – for the Guelfi chapel in the Church of San Domenico in Siena. The work is signed and dated 1445. A XVII-century document records the polyptych having a predella with the Last Judgment and episodes from the Genesis: one predella panel with the Creation is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The work of art needs a restoration intervention especially to the pictorial surface, considerably obscured by a thick layer of dirt.
