Spectacular Sculpture: Highlights from the Opera del Duomo Museum by Emily Fenichel, Ph.D.
Perhaps the most underrated museum in Florence, the Opera del Duomo Museum has a truly spectacular collection of Renaissance Sculpture. The best sculptors in Italy – Donatello, Nanni di Banco, Luca della Robbia, and Michelangelo – all worked to help decorate Florence’s cathedral, which was under continuous construction for several hundred years. It is their works that make up the core of the Opera del Duomo’s collection and the subject of this talk. Together, we will explore the artists and works which once adorned the most famous building in Florence.

About Emily Fenichel, Ph.d
Dr. Emily Fenichel is an Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University. She earned her PhD from the University of Virginia and her dissertation considered Michelangelo’s images of the Virgin Mary in light of their iconographic ingenuity and their religious context. Currently, she is working on several projects, including a book on Michelangelo’s late period. More generally, her research examines the influence of theology, liturgy, and devotion on the art of the Early Modern Period in Italy.
