The donation of the Friends of the Uffizi Gallery for 2021
Dantesque gift to the Uffizi: “ Il Conte Ugolino” by Mascagni enters the collection
The American organization Friends of the Uffizi Gallery has bought and donated to the Galleries the large Dantesque oil painting “Il Conte Ugolino” by the Florentine artist Fra’ Arsenio, born Donato Mascagni, from the beginning of the Seicento. It will be on temporary exhibition in the Niobe Room on the second floor of the Gallery of Statues and Paintings until the end of 2021, the year that marks the 700th anniversary of the Poet’s death. Thanking for the gift, the Uffizi director Eike Schmidt said: “The museum is thus enriched with a rare work of art, an early testimony of the fortunes of the Divine Comedy in the monumental figurative culture.

Dantesque gift to the Uffizi: thanks to the Friends of the Uffizi Gallery, the American affiliate of the Amici degli Uffizi, Il Conte Ugolino enters the collection. Painted by Fra’ Arsenio Mascagni (born Donato Mascagni, 1570-1637) at the beginning of the 17th century, it is a large-size painting making a great impact, and until the end of the year it will be on temporary exhibit in the Niobe Room on the second floor of the Gallery of Statues and Paintings.
